Beyond Boundaries: Feminine Forms

(un)earthing


Since antiquity, Western thought has aligned nature with the female, and by extension, with attributes such as purity, fertility, beauty, bounty, and chaos. This is perhaps most clearly seen in the personification of “mother nature.” The artists in this constellation refuse such simple categorization by withholding literal representations of women’s bodies in the landscape even as they “(un)earth” metaphoric and material inspiration from the natural world.
